Before you let him in the water

The part that is about the water, not the dog

Most water advice focuses on teaching a dog to swim. The things that actually hurt dogs are conditions you can check in thirty seconds before anyone gets wet.

Not automaticVeterinary sources are clear that dogs are not born swimmers. Deep chested, short muzzled, small, senior and arthritic dogs all struggle disproportionately.
Warm waterHarmful algal blooms are most common in warm weather, which is exactly when dogs are in the water.
Never forceCarrying a dog out and putting him in teaches him the water takes him. Every inch has to be his choice.
You call itA dog will keep going well past the point he should stop, because you are having fun. Stopping is the handler’s job.

Sources: Animal Medical Center of New York on dogs and swimming; American Kennel Club on salt water ingestion; ASPCA and AAHA on blue green algae toxicosis. Educational information only, not veterinary advice. If you suspect algae exposure, heatstroke or near drowning, contact a veterinarian immediately.

If the water looks like pea soup or spilled paint, or has a scum on the surface, the day is over. That is not caution, that is the one that kills.
